Since 2011 I have been deeply involved in the conceptual development of the Sanlam Benchmark Symposium. This annual event held in major urban centres was an initiative by Sanlam to share their research on the retirement industry with relevant parties around South Africa. Our goal has always been to enhance the content of the speakers adding to their central message and the greater themes of each Symposium.
In 2011 we created “Symposium Live” a television set complete with cameras, off site reporters placing delegates in the role of a studio audience to help make the content more engaging.
The following year we shot a series of three documentary films each revolving around a relevant character that were played across the course of the day, the idea was to show real people behind the numbers and statistics on display.
In 2013 our theme was “when one day becomes day one” we employed motion graphics and 3D mapping to make the stage come alive, as well as creating a series of videos that showed the long term impact of decisions made when you are younger.
In 2014 the theme was “retire another day” and we shot three futurists telling us what they believed the world would be like in the not too distant future, there words were then brought to life on the screens behind them with animation and graphics.
Finally in 2015 we followed the story of a character named Tumi, who grew up over the course of the conference. Delegates were invited to help Tumi make difficult financial decisions using a voting pad system and the story that unfolded changed according to what they decided.
